Good news: Batabix is staying busy. Bad news: this blog has been neglected, and I know how much enjoyment all of you get out of reading this. Please forgive us.
What we're working on: UNCW Film Studies web site; Aquatics, Inc. web site; 008 web site; Old Books on Front St. web site; Cape Fear Biofules web site; International/Intermodal Equipment Exchange web site; Mosaic in Motion web site; collecting moneys; other, budding projects...

We've
just added Content Management Systems to our services here at Batabix.
We've been working on this for the last couple months and are now offering custom-built online Content Management Systems to our Batabix Design services.
So if you've ever wanted the ability to add, edit or delete content on your web site right from your favorite web browser (FireFox, Safari, IE, Opera, Netscape, whichever) than give us a call.

Do you have a lot of stuff that needs to get done? Really?
Well, your friendly Batabixers would like to recommend a lovely little piece of internet productivity: Remember the Milk (www.rememberthemilk.com).
Remember the Milk lets you set up a series of lists to help organize yourself. It's like post-it notes times 1,000.
Mozilla released Firefox 2 earlier this week. Go get it now. It's 37 percent more shiny.
We went live with a new site today for Thunderbolt Pictures.
The company's first film, "Any Given Friday," is about high school football and its players' personal stories.

Saw
this on McSweeney's today:
Three new Mac ad ideas. The ad ideas involve PC lighting himself on
fire and dying, PC vomiting a writhing mass of worms onto a Japanese
girl and PC beating up a group of thugs.
"PC Guy picks up some binoculars off the ground and raises them to his face. However, instead of looking through them like the Mac Guy, he hurls them against the wall behind him, where they smash into a thousand pieces. He then picks up a gas can and dumps the contents over his head."

We
recently launched a site for Hanover
Search Partners, which is a boutique executive search firm with
a global network of opinion leaders.
For more information visit www.hanoversp.com.
Thanks much to Gregg for being so easy to work with.
From www.hanoversp.com: In collaboration with leading and emerging Pharmaceutical/Biotech and Contract Research Organizations throughout North America and the world, Hanover Search Partners has a vast network of people who make industry thrive. We are proud of our approach to the executive search process and value the trust that both clients and candidates give us for each individual project.

Well,
we've finally switched over to our new server, and it's provided by
our good friends at WestHost. And
guess what? It's stronger, cheaper and faster. I'd like to personally
thank the support team at WestHost
for all their digital-migratory help. Hurrah.
We made the switch because WestHost offered some features our old hosting company didn't (namely: a PHP upgrade, RoR, SSH, VPS, etc...).
We've been recommending WestHost for a while now, but now that we've switched over it has become the official Batabix Design hosting solution.

Well,
it took a while, and a finely worded e-mail from your lovely Batabix
Designers, but Wilmington finally has a Craigslist.
Not sure what Craigslist is? From wikipedia:
Craigslist is a centralized network
of online urban communities, featuring free classified advertisements
(with jobs, housing, personals, for sale/barter/wanted, services, community,
gigs and resumes categories) and forums sorted by various topics.
It was founded in 1995 by Craig Newmark for the San Francisco Bay Area.
After incorporation in 1999, Craigslist expanded into nine more cities
in 2000 (all of them in the U.S.), four each in 2001 and 2002, and 14
in 2003. As of June, 2006, Craigslist had established itself in approximately
310 cities in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Ireland, continental Europe, Australia,
New Zealand, South Africa, Asia, Israel, and Latin America.

Simply creating a website for your company isn't enough anymore. The blogging revolution - some 75,000 new blogs are created every day, according to blog directory Technorati - and the popularity of Internet search - Americans conducted 6.6 billion searches online in April - gives firms many more avenues for exposure. Savvy Web marketers realize that consumers turn to the Web to shop and to learn about companies, which is forcing them to market beyond just the company website.
We recently launched a redesigned version of Yannick Murhy's web site.
Yannick is the author of The Sea of Trees and Stories in Another Language. Her newest book, Here They Come, is available from McSweeney's books.
Thanks to Yannick for having us do the site.
Here They Come is Batabix's official book selection of 2006! Order a copy today and earn 100 Batabix cool points.

With more people turning to the Internet to get their TV, experts are suggesting that the demand could be too much for ISPs to cope with.
Every day, it seems, a new service pops up offering to send you video over the Internet. "Desperate Housewives," Stephen Colbert heckling the president, clips of bad dancers at wedding parties: It's all there.
You may be up for it, but is the Internet?

Studies pointing out the dangers of our technology-enabled lifestyles are nothing new. Topics such as the possibility of getting brain tumors from our cell phones and the danger of video game violence translating into real-world violence frequently pop up on the front pages of newspapers and web sites (including this one) around the world.
If you're using FireFox (and you should be) you can install a simple GreaseMonkey script to change the look of the Google homepage.
And why not?
The rest of Google will stay the same; this will simply change up the initial www.google.com. unfortunately, though, it doesn't work if you use the personalized Google homepage...
To get Google Dark, head on over to www.07designs.com. They'll have you install GreaseMonkey, and then a simple script. After that you'll be ready to use Google, darkly.
UNCW's literary journal Ecotone is now live. We recently redid the site for the creative writing department. Check it out and tell us what you think.
From the "about" page: Much of our best writing grows out of the land. More specifically, it grows from rich, overlapping areas, those unstable, uncategorizable places that aren’t one thing or another. Biological ecotones are areas of great species diversity and biological density, of intense life and death; literary ecotones are the places where words come most alive. These edges—between genres, between science and literature, between land and sea, between urban and rural, between the personal and biological, between the animal and spiritual—are not only more alive, but more interesting and worthy of exploration.

ESPN.com, the online sister of the ESPN cable networks, serves up more than half a billion page views every month, so when the home page of the site dropped all layout tables in favor of structural markup and CSS-driven layout, the Web design community took notice. Savings: 730 terabytes a year.
At Batabix Design we develop all of our sites using standards-compliant CSS. The result? One stylesheet that controls all of your web documents and less load time for viewers.

A handful of examples of how Google's genetic composition is poised to transform — in most cases, the transformation has already begun.
Over the past eight years, Google has quietly and steadily assembled an impressive suite of products and services (yes, their capabilities span far beyond the realm of "I'm Feeling Lucky"). All the while, critics argue that at a time when it is essential for the promise of the Google brand be clear to all, the evolution of Google and its sub-branded properties only makes its promise more elusive.

The browser isn't everything when it comes to Microsoft's platform strategy for next-generation Web applications, but it remains key, Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates made clear Monday at MIX 06.
Microsoft made a mistake in waiting to build new innovations in its own browser technology, Internet Explorer, he admitted.

Right now we're working on a couple of projects: We're doing a site for UNCW's literary journal Ecotone, updating the Legion Production Services site and doing a site for cinematographer M. Shawn Lewallen.
We met with Erica Dunton the other day, a talented director from England. Looks like we'll be doing a site with her as well -- another exciting project to add to the Batabix line-up.
Other than that we've been spending our time being all around awesome, etc., you know how it is.
What else is in the works? Wouldn't you like to know. Batabix gets bizzay (to quote Sean Carter).

Here's an interesting article from nature.com. It talks about how quickly users judge a web site.
"Like the look of our website? Whatever the answer (and hopefully it was yes), the chances are you made your mind up within the first twentieth of a second. A study by researchers in Canada has shown that the snap decisions Internet users make about the quality of a web page have a lasting impact on their opinions."

Here's an interesting article from NewScientist.com about branding:
"A person’s liking for a particular brand name is wired into a specific part of the brain, a new study reveals. The research may provide an insight into the brain mechanisms that underlie the behavioural preferences that advertisers attempt to hijack."4 January 2006
Well, it's a new year again. Projects in the works for BATABIX DESIGN, LLC include (but are not ultimately limited to)

Installation of Legion Production's office-front began today at 208 S. Front St. in beautiful Wilmington, NC.
We'll have pictures up on the homepage this week.
The design was done by Batabix.

Well,
the MF Doom show we were so excited about in Wilmington just didn't
happen. The venue claimed that Doom's flight got delayed, but a lot
of people are wondering if Doom ever knew about the show at all.
Who flies into a town at 8 p.m. when they have a show at 10 p.m.? The whole thing felt thrown together and poorly planned.
Thanks Marrz.
I, for one, feel ripped off. What's worse is that I still haven't been able to get a refund for my tickets.
14 December 2005
OK,
MF Doom is coming to Wilmington,
NC this Saturday. This is a big deal. We occasionally get national acts,
but I never would have imagined that MF Doom would come here.
The bad thing is that he's playing at Marrz, a less than stellar venue. Bad thing number two: nobody knows how to get tickets or if he's even coming. You can buy tickets at Gravity Records on Kerr Avenue. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 the night of.
So, fingers crossed that this thing actually happens. I bought two tickets yesterday.
Here's a clip of an interview that a friend of a friend conducted (I'm guessing) over e-mail. (Thanks Kenneth for interview, info.)
Currents: Why Wilmington? You could book up any venue in the country. Why play here in such a relatively small town?
MF Doom: Never had a chance to see my peoples in NC. I wanted to check it out.
Currents: In the last three years you have been involved with over a dozen projects, all of which have been brilliant. What is your drive? What is pushing you to work so hard and to create such fantastic music?
Doom: Kash and Kreativity
Currents: How did you begin work with Madlib and Dangermouse? Did they approach you or did you want to work with them? Of the two, which is your favorite? Which are you most proud of?
Doom: They both reached out to me and they both are my brothers. I got love for both
Currents: There is a constant rumor that a MF Doom and Ghostface Killer project is in the works. Any truth to that?
Doom: I'm not at liberty to speak on that one yet.
Currents: What are your final thoughts of hip hop in general and the current trends in hip hop in particular?
Doom: None of my thoughts are final.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Again, tickets are at Gravity Records for $20, and the show is Saturday, Dec. 17 at Marrz.

Flickr
is one of those web sites that hopefully everyone knows about by now.
It's a photo community where you can post your pictures (everything's
free too) and browse other people's pictures.
It's a very simple idea, yes, but such a wonderful page.
The thing that continually surprises me is the quality of the shots. This isn't myspace. These people are good -- but anyone can sign up and post photographs.
Go to http://www.flickr.com/explore and start digging through people's sets and profiles. You'll find some amazing pictures from all over the world.
You can search browse tags, search keywords or just look at random images.
The site's setup and coding are done extraordinarily well. Everything seems to work flawlessly.
Batabix Design will have a Flickr set up soon, so stay tuned for that.
So, if you already knew about flickr, I'm sorry for rambling about it. But if not, you should definitely go look.

Every Sunday Batabix Design spends time trying to improve our clients' search engine ranking. This is done through Search Engine Optimization.
There are several ways to improve a site's ranking in engines like Google and Yahoo!, and so, as an added bonus to you, we constantly edit and update your site's Search Engine Optimization. Why? Because we like you and we want your page to be in the top 3 on a Google search.
Want to know more? Contact us.
If you're not using Firefox we'd like to recommend it. Especially if you're using Microsoft IE. You can dowload it, or learn more, here.
Or, for a list of reasons why you should switch to Firefox, visit: killbillsbrowser.com.
Mac users might want to check out the Camino browser too, for a better alternative to Microsoft IE.

The Legion Production Services project is winding to a close and has been
a successful venture for both parties.
Legion approached us wanting a web site and a logo, but when we were finished we had created a full corporate branding strategy (including business cards, logo, letterhead, envelopes) a web site, stickers, T-shirts, several advertising campaigns and even their office-front design.
For examples of what came out of the Legion project you can visit our “work” page. We hope to do much, much more with Legion Production Services in the future. Good luck, guys.

In an attempt to keep the general public up-to-date on all Batabix Design goings-on we have decided to create a news-type blog. Here you will find all the latest information about projects Batabix. In the works are: Legion Production Services and Jim Lecroy Fine Photography.
